Guidelines for Fast and Abstinence During Lent
Lent is fast approaching, since Ash Wednesday is on
February 17th. Abstinence: Catholics who are 14 years of
age and older may not eat meat on Ash Wednesday, Good
Friday, and all the Fridays in Lent. This guideline is
symbolized by the open outline of a fish on the calendar
that we distributed. These calendars are still available
in the vestibule.
Fasting: All Catholic between the ages of 18 –59 may
only eat one full meal and two smaller meals that should
not equal one full meal on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday. Eating between meals is not permitted, but
liquids are allowed. This fasting guideline is
symbolized by the purpled colored drawing of a fish on
the calendar that we distributed. Those not practicing
these guidelines because of age or ill health are urged
to practice some other form of penance or mortification.
In addition to these guidelines, all are urged to pray
more and give alms during Lent.
Word of the week—Corporal A corporal is the
square white cloth that is spread on the altar to hold
the patens and chalices during the Eucharist, especially
to catch particles of the host that may fall from the
paten.
